Bathymetric and topographic grid intended for simulations of the 1945 Makran tsunami in Karachi Harbour

This digital elevation model provides a tool for calibrating tsunami risk to observations of the 1945 Makran tsunami in Karachi Harbour. The DEM bathymetry is derived from soundings made mainly during the first eight years after the tsunami. Although deficient in portraying intertidal backwaters and upland topography, the DEM accurately depicts the sheltered setting of one of the two tide gauges that recorded the 1945 tsunami.

Access Constraints Use Constraints: No known legal restrictions. Limitations of the dataset include its failure to encompass the entire backwater areas west and east of Karachi Harbour. These chiefly intertidal areas may have large capacity for tsunami water. Additional problems with the dataset include: (1) use of assumed channel depths and mangrove heights in the backwaters; (2) use of 19th-century soundings on the tidal flat east of Kiamari Groyne; and (3) incorporation of modern upland topography, from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission, that is insecurely related to the vertical datum of the DEM., Access Constraints: No known restrictions
