BLM REA YKL 2011 Community Subsistence Use & Harvest Areas for Black Bear

Metadata Updated: November 12, 2020

Some of the YKL rasters intentionally do not align or have the same extent. These rasters were not snapped to a common raster per the authors' discretion. Please review selected rasters prior to use. These varying alignments are a result of the use of differing source data sets and all products derived from them. We recommend that users snap or align rasters as best suits their own projects. - Fishing and hunting are essential parts of local livelihoods. Subsistence forms a substantial part of the household and community economy in the region. A large majority of the population in remote rural Alaska depends substantially on subsistence to supplement their wages. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game conducts annual surveys in communities across the state, inquiring about subsistence harvest amounts and practices. This is the only known and accessible source of data on subsistence use areas. This data shows general subsistence harvest areas of black bear for the study area, based on data available from ADF&G Division of Subsistence. Data is only available for certain communities for each resource. The data is aggregated to the community level and shows to what extent these areas overlap between communities.
