WATER TEMPERATURE and other data from ALIS, PACIFIC ISLANDER and other platforms from 1989-01-13 to 1991-09-14 (NCEI Accession 9200038)

Metadata Updated: December 4, 2020

The water depth and temperature data were collected as part of Tropical Ocean Global Atmosphere (TOGA) project from multiple ships between January 13, 1989 and September 14, 1991. The originator's bathythermograph (XBT) data containing 6699 profiles were submitted on a tape by Jean-Paul Rebert, Institut Français de Recherche pour l'Exploitation de la MER (IFREMER), Plouzane, France. The data have been converted and are now available on line in C116 (XBT) file format of NODC.

The data type C116 contained temperature-depth profile data obtained using expendable bathythermograph (XBT) instruments. Cruise information, position, date and time were reported for each observation. The data record was comprised of pairs of temperature-depth values. The XBT data files contained temperature values at non-uniform depths. These depths were recorded at the minimum number of points ("inflection points") required to accurately define the temperature curve. Standard XBTs can obtain profiles to depths of either 450 or 760 m. With special instruments, measurements can be obtained to 1830 m.
